The Los Angeles County district attorney's office has referred Aldon Smith's airport arrest earlier this month to the Los Angeles city attorney's office for misdemeanor consideration.

The San Francisco 49ers' star pass-rusher was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on April 13 for making a fake bomb threat. He was later released on a $20,000 bond.

A spokesman at the city attorney's office said Thursday that a decision on charges may be made within a week.

The 49ers declined to comment on Thursday's development because the case is pending.

Smith, 24, has a court appearance Tuesday on felony gun charges and a drunken driving charge in Santa Clara (Calif.) County. He also faces potential discipline from the league.

The 49ers have until May 3 to pick up a $9.75 million option on Smith's contract for the 2015 season. A league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that the team isn't expected to exercise the option.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
