KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The sight of Jamaal Charles being taken off the Arrowhead Stadium field with a likely torn ACL in his right knee was made worse by what happened after he left Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears.
TheChiefsled the Bears 17-3 with Charles in their lineup. They collapsed without him, losing 18-17 after the Bears scored two touchdowns in the final 3 minutes, 5 seconds.
The Chiefs appeared to have the life taken out of them as Charles left their lineup. He was injured without contact making a cut with Kansas City facing a first-and-goal from the Chicago 9.
"From there, production quit," quarterback Alex Smith said. "I don't know if that was it or what. Offensively, we went into a shell there for a little while, you know, and just didn't get anything done. Had some decent field position, really had a chance to really put that game away with some first downs and just three and out, three and out. It didn't help the defense at all."
Coach Andy Reid said the preliminary report he received was that Charles had a torn ACL. He was scheduled for an MRI on Monday.
Charles put no weight on the leg as he was helped from the field. He was briefly examined by medical personnel on the sideline before heading to the locker room.
Charles missed all but two games of the 2011 season with a torn ACL in his left knee.
The Chiefs have used Charcandrick West as their backup for Charles. West carried seven times for 31 yards Sunday.
