Talented, but oft-injured Cal defensive end Brennan Scarlett is expected to transfer to rival Stanford for his final year of eligibility, according to the Bay Area News Group.
"Brennan Scarlett will be completing his degree and graduating from the Haas School of Business this spring," Cal athletic director Michael Willaims wrote in an e-mail to the newspaper group. "We are proud of his efforts in the classroom and on the field (especially having to battle back from the injuries he sustained during his playing career).
"Brennan is a young man with tremendous character and has represented our program well. We understand he has chosen to pursue his master's degree at another university and play his final year of eligibility alongside his younger brother."
Scarlett's brother, Cameron Scarlett, a three-star running back, recently signed with the Cardinal.
With his degree in hand, he would have been free to transfer nearly anywhere in the country, but an in-conference transfer requires a waiver -- something Williams said Cal would sign off on.
During his four seasons in Berkeley, Scarlett played in just 17 games and saw his 2014 season ended after five games due to a torn ACL. Because of his injury history -- he played in just three games in 2011, nine in 2012 and missed the entire 2013 season -- it's hard to project to what degree Scarlett can help Stanford, but he's a welcome addition on a defensive line severely lacking in depth.
