San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey sat out his second straight game on Tuesday with an irritated nerve in his right thumb, and he might rest again Wednesday night.

That would give him five full days off, including Thursday's off day.

Posey said Tuesday that he has been dealing with the thumb issue for some time.

"It's a little more flared up," he said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

When asked if the injury is affecting Posey's hitting, at first manager Bruce Bochy said "no question," according to the newspaper. But he then said that Posey is still hitting line drives, but his long-ball power might be suffering.

A career .307 hitter with an .853 on-base plus slugging percentage, Posey is batting .257 with a .766 OPS this season.

If Posey misses Wednesday's game, it will mark the first time he won't catch in a start by Giants ace Madison Bumgarnersince late in the 2014 season, a run of 45 straight regular-season appearances.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
