Gary Kubiak would take Broncos job

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak plans to accept the Denver Broncos' head-coaching job if it is offered to him, sources told ESPN.

Kubiak is believed to be the top candidate for Denver's coaching vacancy, so it will be up to him and the Broncos to share their football philosophies and reach an agreement when they meet Sunday in Houston.

If a deal is reached, the Broncos are not expected to announce the hire until Tuesday, after Sunday's conference championship games and Monday's Martin Luther King holiday.

Kubiak said in a statement earlier this month that he would remain with the Ravens, although he acknowledged it was "flattering and humbling to be invited to interview for a number of NFL head coaching positions."

But he issued the statement before the Broncos and coach John Fox mutually parted ways Monday, one day after Denver's upset playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Kubiak was a teammate of John Elway, Denver's general manager and executive vice president of football operations, with the Broncos from 1983 (Elway's rookie year) until 1991. Kubiak was also a Broncos assistant coach, as offensive coordinator, on Mike Shanahan's staff from 1995 to 2005.

The Ravens also believe that Kubiak might be the front-runner in Denver and already have begun hearing from potential replacements should he leave, a league source told ESPN's Ed Werder.

Kubiak was the Texans' coach for eight seasons, going 61-64 in regular-season games. The Texans went to the playoffs following the 2011 and 2012 seasons, but Kubiak was fired after the team went 2-11 in its first 13 games of 2013.
