J.T. Barrett suffers fractured ankle

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio Statestarting quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate J.T. Barrettsuffered a fractured ankle during the fourth quarter of the Buckeyes' 42-28 victory against rivalMichiganon Saturday.

Barrett, who will have surgery Sunday, will miss the remainder of the season, the school announced.

"We lost a Heisman candidate today," Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said after the game.

Sophomore backupCardale Joneswill start in next Saturday's Big Ten championship game when theEast Division champion Buckeyes(No. 6 CFP, No. 7 AP)play at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis against Wisconsin, which beat Minnesota on Saturday to win the West.

"The good thing is, he's going to get a lot of reps,'' Meyer said of Jones.

Barrett, a redshirt freshman, appeared to have his leg buckle under him while being tackled on a rush to start the fourth quarter at the Horseshoe.

The training staff immediately came out to attend to Barrett, placing a temporary air cast on his leg and carting him to the locker room. He clapped once during the ride to the tunnel and waved to the crowd before being replaced by Jones.

Michigan quarterback Devin Gardneralso came to Barrett's side and spoke to him before he was taken off the field.

"He's probably one of the toughest kids I've ever met, the way he handles his business, and even seeing him in that locker room, he's as tough as nails," Buckeyes tight end Jeff Heuerman said. "That's what I told the team afterwards, man, I've never met someone like him before. It's a huge loss, but we've got to keep moving forward, and we're going to prepare as a team and an offense to get ready for next week."

Barrett, who led the nation with 42 total touchdowns entering the game, completed 13 of 21 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown against Michigan. He also ran for scores of 25 and 2 yards while gaining 89 yards total on 15 carries.

He finishes the season with school records for total yards (3,772), passing touchdowns (34) and total touchdowns (45), which also set a Big Ten record. Barrett passed for 2,834 yards and rushed for an additional 938 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Barrett had taken over the job in August when three-year starter and two-time Big Ten MVP Braxton Miller was lost for the season after shoulder surgery.
