Club Leon claimed on Monday that Landon Donovan will return to the San Jose Earthquakes -- but it's only for a friendly match.

The Mexican club wrote on Twitter: "Landon Donovan will return to his country in March, following interest from San Jose Earthquake of MLS."

But it turned out to only be a bit of marketing, as the Earthquakes soon announced that the teams will play at theAvaya Stadium on March 24.

Donovan began his MLS career with San Jose from 2001-03, while on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, and helped the Quakes win the MLS Cup in 2003.

The Earthquakes open their season on March 3, but only play every other Saturday that month. Leon are also off on the 24th because of the FIFA international break.

Donovan came out of retirement for the second time last month to sign with the Liga MX club. He made his debut with Leon on Saturday, coming on as a late substitute in a 2-1 win over Puebla.
