Linebacker NaVorro Bowman has agreed to a four-year contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers worth $44 million, with $20 million guaranteed, a source tells ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Bowman had three years left on his contract, making the extension unprecedented.

The 28-year-old is a three-time Pro Bowl selection (2012, '13 and '15) and led the league with 154 tackles in 2015.

Bowman turned in the performance after missing the entire 2014 season while recovering from a torn ACL and MCL suffered in the NFC Championship Game in January, 2014.
