Notre Damehas suspended running back Greg Bryant for the first four games of the coming season for a violation of team rules, a source told ESPN.com.

247Sports reported the news of Bryant's suspension earlier on Monday.

The 5-foot-10, 205-pound Bryant entered Notre Dame in 2013 as ESPN's No. 2 running back prospect in the nation, but he has yet to break through. He took a medical redshirt his freshman year because of knee tendinitis after playing in three games that season.

Bryant has 57 carries for 303 yards and three touchdowns in 15 career games for the Fighting Irish. He also has five catches for 50 yards, eight punt returns for 94 yards and four kick returns for 85 yards.

Tarean Folston is Notre Dame's leading returning rusher and was the team's No. 1 running back this spring. Bryant and running back/receiver C.J. Prosise split second-team carries.

Bryant will miss games against Texas, Virginia, Georgia Tech and Massachusetts. He'll be eligible to return for Notre Dame's Oct. 3 game at Clemson.
