SAN JOSE, Calif. -- San Jose Sharks coach Todd McLellan has been picked as head coach for Canada's national team at the upcoming world championship.
Hockey Canada made the announcement Tuesday that McLellan will run the team for the tournament in the Czech Republic from May 1-17.
Sharks assistant Jay Woodcroft will also be on the staff along with former New Jersey Devils coach Peter DeBoer and Carolina coach Bill Peters.
McLellan has previous experience with Team Canada. He was an assistant on the bronze medal-winning team at the 2000 world junior championship.
McLellan just finished his seventh season as Sharks coach. The team missed the playoffs for the first time since 2003 and McLellan's future in San Jose is in doubt.
