Sources: Harbaugh will return to Michigan to take coaching job

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Reports are out that the struggling San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh is leaving San Francisco. It seems like everybody in the nation has their own idea of where he is going.

University of Michigan, Harbaugh's alma mater, is definitely in pursuit. They have an event set up for Tuesday which requires catering, which may be the first hint.

Reports have Harbaugh and Michigan agreeing on Friday to a 6-year, $48 million deal, and all he has to do is sign it.

Others have Harbaugh telling his team Sunday, after the 49ers game, what his plans are.

The Raiders, Jets, Bears and Giants may all have head coaching positions open in the NFL, and Harbaugh will be a hot commodity.

He has to decide if he wants to step back down to the college level or continue his pursuit of football's top trophy - the Lombardi.

On Saturday, ABC7 News asked Maryland Head Coach Randy Edsall, whose team is playing in the Foster Farms Bowl, what he thought about Harbaugh coming back to the college level.

"He's go this philosophy and what he believes in. You can see that wherever he's been, he's been successful -- San Diego, Stanford and San Francisco. So I'm sure that wherever he lands up or if he stays in San Francisco, he'll continue to be successful because he has a model and a philosophy that has been proven to be successful," Edsall said.

One thing that can be guaranteed is that the decision will be made 28-48 hours after Sunday's game.
