Victor Martinez (knee) out 4-6 weeks

The Detroit Tigers anticipate that Victor Martinez will be ready for the start of the upcoming season after the slugger underwent knee surgery Tuesday.

The Tigers announced that Martinez had successful surgery to repair a torn left meniscus and that he will resume full activity in four to six weeks.

Detroit opens its regular season April 6 against the Minnesota Twins.

"We are very happy the surgery went well and that Victor will be ready to compete for the start of the 2015 season," Tigers general manager David Dombrowski said in a statement released by the team.

Martinez suffered the injury during offseason workouts, resulting in the operation that was performed by Dr. James Andrews.

The 36-year-old, switch-hitting designated hitter batted .335 with 32 home runs and 103 RBIs in 2014 in helping Detroit to its fourth straight American League Central title. He finished second to Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout in the AL MVP voting.
