Point spreads on Week 1 NFL games popped up in Las Vegas shortly after the regular-season schedule was announced Tuesday night. And the Oakland Raiders find themselves in a familiar role.
The Westgate SuperBook opened the Raiders as 3-point home underdogs to the Cincinnati Bengals in a Sept. 13th opener. Barring dramatic line movement, it will be the 25th straight game that Oakland has been an underdog, a streak that dates back to a Nov. 3, 2013 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles.
In the traditional Thursday opener featuring the Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots opened as 6-point home favorites over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Defending Super Bowl champions are 9-2 straight-up in season openers since 2004.
The Patriots are 11-4 (6-8-1 against the spread) in season openers under coach Bill Belichick.
The Steelers, who will be without suspended running backLe'Veon Bell, are the largest underdogs on the Week 1 board.
The Green Bay Packers are 4-point road favorites at the Chicago Bears. The Packers have won nine of the last 10 meetings with the Bears. Chicago is one of seven home underdogs in the opening week.
In addition to the Bears and Raiders, the Buffalo Bills, Washington Redskins, Carolina Panthers, St. Louis Rams and Atlanta Falcons are home underdogs.
In the Sunday prime-time game, the Dallas Cowboys are 5.5-point favorites over the New York Giants.
The Falcons are 1.5-point underdogs to the visiting Eagles in Game 1 of the Monday night doubleheader on ESPN. The Eagles-Falcons game has the highest over/under total at 53.4. The Cleveland Browns-New York Jets game has the lowest total at 41. Five games have totals of 50 or more.
The San Francisco 49ers, who have experienced an offseason full of turnover, are 3.5-point favorites over the visiting Minnesota Vikings in the second game of the Monday doubleheader. The Vikings may or may not have embattled star running back Adrian Peterson.
The Seattle Seahawks are 3.5-point favorites at the Rams in their opener. The Seahawks, at 5-1, are the current favorites to win the Super Bowl at the SuperBook, followed by the Patriots and Packers at 7-1.
Limits on the Week 1 lines at the SuperBook are $5,000 on the side and $1,000 on over/under totals. The SuperBook will post NFL season win totals and odds to win each division May 3. Las Vegas sportsbook operator CG Technology will posts lines on all games, Weeks 1 through 16, in late May.
