2 people hospitalized following vehicle crash in Tenderloin

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Two people were hospitalized after a driver struck a traffic signal pole and then a pedestrian in San Francisco's Tenderloin neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, a police spokeswoman said.

The crash was reported at 2:34 p.m. on McAllister Street between Leavenworth Street and Charles J. Brenham Place, San Francisco police Officer Grace Gatpandan said.

San Francisco fire spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said the driver of the vehicle struck a traffic signal and then a pedestrian.

Talmadge and Gatpandan both said initial reports suggested the pedestrian was a bicyclist.

Talmadge said two people were transported to the hospital, one suffering from potentially life-threatening injuries.

Henry Ntuyen, a baker at California Bakery, which is located at that intersection, said he was inside working when he heard a loud noise come from the street.

He looked outside and saw a vehicle had come to a stop on the sidewalk across the street from the bakery, but wasn't sure how many people were injured.
