Police search for two men who ran from I-580 shooting

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- A shooting led to a traffic nightmare for East Bay commuters on Wednesday. It happened just before 4 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 580 near the Highway 24 interchange through Oakland.

Police are searching for at least two men who could be armed and dangerous. ABC7 News spoke to a witness who says he saw them running down the interstate shortly after the shooting.

At least six bullets pierced the side of an Acura as it was driving eastbound on I-580 near the Highway 24 split in Oakland. A witness says he heard several gunshots around 3:30 p.m. from the overpass at MLK Jr. Way.

The witness, who wanted to remain anonymous, told ABC7 News, "As I looked out the window I saw two cars hit each other. The two spun around."

The CHP says the cars smashed into the wall and were now facing oncoming traffic. The witness saw two men jump out of the Chevy Impala which turned out to be a rental car.

The witness continued to say the suspects "ran down westbound on the 580. One jumped down the hill and ran down 35th Street towards West."

The driver of the Acura was wounded. His passenger was detained at the scene. The CHP says a third car was damaged in the wreck, but was able to drive off.

The highway shooting caused a huge rush hour bottleneck that impacted traffic all the way back to the maze.

By 7:00 p.m., eastbound I-580 reopened.

The Oakland Police Department is in charge of the investigation.
