Traffic crawls in Bay Area before start of holiday weekend
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Friday was a tough day to be on the road. Traffic was completely backed up along all of the major highways from Richmond all the way into San Francisco.
A major part of all the problems is this weekend's closure of Southbound Interstate 280 in San Francisco.
The traffic backed up horribly on Harrison Street in the city because it is one of only a few on-ramps to Highway 101. Because I-280 southbound is shut down through the weekend, everyone leaving the city toward the peninsula is having to pile on to an already loaded 101. It has created some significant delays for drivers.
Drivers who are used to getting out of the city on I-280 southbound may not be familiar with the onramps to Highway 101. They are at Harrison and 4th Street, Harrison and 7th Street, the 10th Street on-ramp, the Mariposa on-ramp and Cesar Chavez.
Besides this rush hour traffic mess, traffic enforcement officers are also gearing up for the Giants fans leaving after Friday's game. They'll be posted along on-ramps at Mariposa and Cesar Chavez to help.
The backups were not only in San Francisco. Some of the worst traffic is in the East Bay. Traffic backed up approaching the toll plaza to the Bay Bridge.
