Bay Area parents await word from daughter in Cabo

ALAMEDA, Calif. (KGO) -- There is a desperate plea from the family of Bay Area tourists who have been missing since Hurricane Odile delivered a direct hit to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Conditions in Cabo are dire -- resorts and hotels are running dangerously low on food and water, the power is out, phone lines are down and the few stores that survived the storm have been looted.

ABC7 News spoke with the Vasquez Family whose daughter has been missing since the hurricane hit. That family is hoping and praying their daughter is OK. She has health issues and so far there hasn't been a word from her.

Liz Vasquez has left dozens of messages for her daughter, Lisa, on her voicemail. Liz often says something like, "Lisa, call me as soon as you can. It's Mom. We love you."

Lisa and her fiance, David, were vacationing in Cabo when Hurricane Odile hit last weekend.

"Basically, they're missing!" Liz said.

Liz and her husband, Tomas, say their daughter texted Sunday morning to say, "It was raining very hard." But then, texts and calls stopped.

"I'm getting to the end of my rope," Liz said. "My daughter has a potential life threatening condition, if she eats the wrong food, she could go into anaphylactic shock."

Calls to their Cabo hotel won't go through and emails have not been answered. The couple is searching the web for any news about stranded tourists and when flights might be departing again.

The Vasquez Family hopes anyone returning can help.

"Please let us know, we're desperate to know whether they're safe or not," Liz said.

Alaska Airlines tweeted Wednesday evening that conditions in Cabo remain difficult. They were able to operate three relief flights on Wednesday and more flights are planned.

Some Bay Area vacationers return home from Cabo

Bride-to-be Nicki Van Vaerenbergh just made it out of Cabo, escaping what can only be called a "bachelorette party from hell". There were 14 girlfriends in paradise for the weekend when the power and water went out. The group took refuge in a hotel near the airport which was battered by the storm.

"We were all hunkered down in the hallways, but then some of the windows started shattering in the hallways, so we quickly moved into our bathroom," San Francisco resident Nicki Van Vaerenbergh said.

Van Vaerenbergh and her friends finally boarded a flight home on a federal police plane.
