Fallen tree traps woman in car in Castro Valley

CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. (KGO) -- For the second time in less than a week, a tree has fallen onto a car on Crow Canyon Road in Castro Valley.

A large eucalyptus tree smashed into the front window of an SUV Wednesday night.

County crews worked to cut the tree into more manageable pieces making things even more dangerous. The tree tangled with power lines, trapping a woman in her car for about an hour.

The woman described herself a shaken but unharmed.

"One of the eucalyptus trees on the East side of the roadway basically fell and landed on the vehicle," said Sgt. Donald Carte of the CHP.

The driver traveled Northbound on Crow Canyon Road just past Cold Water Drive.

The 100-foot-tall tree fell around 6 p.m. Within an hour PG&E de-energized the power lines it took down.

"It was on the ground," Carte told ABC7 News. "And the car was actually resting on the line."

On the same stretch of roadway, another tree fell and caused injuries.

"I think just because of all the rain that we've been having, I think that the trees and the root systems are not holding up as well as they should," Carte continued.

Crow Canyon Road has closed several times for storm-related cleanups.
