Passengers evacuated after VTA train breaks down in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- A total of eight passengers were evacuated after a VTA light rail train broke down on Highway 87 in San Jose due to a mechanical issue.

Initially, fire crews said two passengers were being treated for heat related issues. However, VTA clarified later in the day that no passengers were treated for heat exhaustion, adding that nobody was hurt.

Still no word on whether the problems are heat-related. The issue is causing major disruptions in service.

Light rail service has been restored between the Tasman and I-880 stations, and is operating normally now near Old Ironsides.

Meanwhile, a bus bridge between the Blossom Hill and Ohlone Chynoweth stations will continue through the evening. VTA says they will work through the night and hope to have the Blossom Hill station full operational for the morning commute.
