1 killed, 6 injured following shooting at 'unsanctioned' party in Morgan Hill, police say

MORGAN HILL, Calif. (KGO) -- A shooting at a large party in Santa Clara County Saturday night killed one person and injured six others, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said in an update on the shooting Sunday.

The Sheriff's Office initially said Sunday morning that eight people were shot at the unpermitted gathering but revised that in a later statement to say that six people were injured by gunfire, while one person was pronounced dead at the scene, for a total of seven adult victims.

The gathering was at Hale Avenue, near Miramonte Avenue, in an unincorporated area of the county just northwest of the city of Morgan Hill, and was described by a Sheriff's Office spokesperson as an unsanctioned party that was promoted on social media and drew about 300 attendees.

Sheriff's deputies were responding to a call about intoxicated people in the street and a person throwing bottles at cars at about 10:15 p.m.

They arrived to find scenes of chaos unfolding as partygoers fled from just-fired gunshots, according to a statement from the Sheriff's Office.

Several victims were shot. Deputies provided medical assistance until paramedics arrived and declared one victim dead from their injuries.

At a Sunday press briefing, authorities said all of the victims are adults. Some of the victims have been discharged, while some are still in the hospital with minor- to-serious injuries to the shoulder, abdomen and ankle, according to Brooks Jarosz, senior communications officer at Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

Several other police departments and the California Highway Patrol also responded to coordinate the scene and establish an area for people at the gathering to make contact with their families or friends.

Santa Clara County Sheriff Robert Jonsen called the violence "unacceptable" in a statement.

"Our hearts go out to the victim's family, those recovering from their injuries and everyone in our community affected by this traumatic event," he said. "We will work tirelessly until those responsible for this horrific act are identified, apprehended, and held fully accountable."

The investigation is expected to be "lengthy and complex," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

A handgun was believed to be the weapon used in the shooting. The Sheriff's Office believes the shooting was isolated.

The party was not related to the Gilroy Garlic Festival and other events in the area, Jarosz said.

The victim has not been identified. Authorities said the medical examiner's officer will release that information.
