Residents displaced, firefighters injured after massive fire at Foster City condo complex

FOSTER CITY, Calif. (KGO) -- More than 50 units were damaged in a fire at a Foster City condominium complex, leaving numerous residents displaced as firefighters continued battling hotspots Monday morning, officials said.

The blaze broke out about 2:30 p.m. Sunday at a condo complex on Sea Spray Lane and quickly spread through the building. More than 14 hours after the fire began, crews were still working to extinguish remaining flames.

Aerial images from SKY7 show extensive damage to the condominium building, with portions of the structure fully gutted. Firefighters spent the morning dousing the building with water as parts were still smoldering.

Residents affected by the fire were left coping with the loss of their homes.

"I'm choked up," said displaced resident Keith Thompkins. "My mom's old, she almost died. Horrible but I'm alright."

Thompkins said he was not home when the fire started, but his mother and her caretaker were inside. Both escaped safely as the fire grew.

Lisa Shoulders, who lives a few units from where the fire started, said she left quickly and was concerned about items left behind.

"Our storage unit is close to the area that's involved in it," she said. "We have boxes of old family pictures and mementos."

Parts of the building appeared severely damaged, including an area that was blown out following extensive water use during firefighting efforts. The building appeared to be a total loss.

Crews faced hot temperatures and windy conditions while battling the blaze, and fire officials said weather conditions could continue to affect operations.

"As the temperature warms up today, you're going to see an increase in smoke production out here and that's just going to be natural as the humidity starts to fall and it gets a little bit warmer," said Matt Turturici, chief of the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department.

Firefighters remained on scene Monday as suppression efforts continued.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
