Yes, Angel Island is supposed to be smoking as CAL FIRE conducts controlled burn

ANGEL ISLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- A controlled burn is underway on Angel Island on Tuesday, with crews working to reduce dangerous amounts of vegetation, according to officials.

A view from SKY7 showed a plume of smoke rising into the sky above the island. Smoke can be seen and smelled in San Francisco and other areas due to the fire.

CAL FIRE is working with Marin County Fire and the California State Parks service on the vegetation management effort.

Crews plan to burn 260 acres on the island as part of the operation expected to last until 6 p.m. Tuesday.

CAL FIRE told ABC7 Eyewitness News reporter Suzanne Phan Wednesday's operations have been canceled at Angel Island State Park.

The controlled burn is intended to reduce hazardous vegetation on Angel Island, officials said.

The park and campgrounds have remained open, but access to trails and roads near the areas have been temporarily closed.

CAL FIRE released a statement on X, saying:

"The prescribed burn at Angel Island State Park is progressing as planned, with crews seeing positive fuel consumption that is meeting project objectives."

"Favorable weather and fuel conditions have allowed firefighters to safely and effectively treat targeted areas, reducing hazardous fuel loads while supporting long-term wildfire resilience and habitat restoration on the island."

"Tuesday's prescribed fire operation at Angel Island State Park successfully accomplished several key objectives outlined in the project parameters. Following further evaluation of conditions and discussions with the Bay Area Air District, all project partners agreed to cancel Wednesday's burning operations. If conditions become more favorable in future days, the partner agencies will evaluate opportunities to resume the operation and continue this important fuels management and habitat restoration work," CAL FIRE said in a statement Tuesday.
