The driver of the SUV ran from the scene and so far no arrests have been made.
Police said speed and reckless driving appear to be factors in the collision.
A GoFundMe account set up by teachers at Emenike's middle school in San Francisco on behalf of his mother had raised more than $3,800 as of Wednesday afternoon.
The site describes him as "the kind of person who made everyone around him smile. A smart, kind, funny kid with a bright future. He was a great athlete and a good sport. A wonderful friend and teammate. A beloved brother and son."
