BART police say an officer located the one victim and immediately applied a tourniquet to a wound which likely saved the man's life. He was taken to Highland Hospital with life-threatening injuries but is in stable condition.
The suspect in the shooting fled from the Fruitvale station and is still at large, BART said. A description of the suspect will be released after the agency reviews surveillance footage.
BART Police Chief Ed Alvarez said officers detained a man outside the Lake Merritt station who matched the description of the suspect but he was later released as not being connected to the shooting.
The train where the shooting happened was taken out of service. The case prompted major delays on the Berryessa line in the Daly City, Richmond, Berryessa and Dublin/Pleasanton directions, according to BART.
