In San Jose, the line at The Tech Museum formed at 6 a.m. for the 7 p.m. showing on Thursday.
The Tech Museum boasts the only IMAX film projector in the Bay Area.
"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" is the longest Star Wars movie, running two and a half hours. The actual film reel weighs about 1,000 lbs.
It arrived in 45 pieces and took 12 hours to splice together.

Once the movie gets rolling, the film moves at five and a half feet per second!
Many fans wore costumes to the theater -- everything from BB8 to Princess Leia.
And, the museum had some very realistic Strom Troopers and a Darth Vader on hand as well.
Both the 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. showings sold out back in October, as soon as they went on sale.
