Authorities said at least two deputies were serving an eviction at the business dwelling -- which contained some sort of converted living space -- before one of the deputies was shot. The cause of the eviction notice was reportedly a failure to pay rent, but police had no specifics about the living situation.

"Our civil unit was there to effect an eviction process that started in early November of 2023," Modeste said Thursday, "The notice was posted to that dwelling on January 14 and the deputies were there yesterday to serve that eviction notice."

The suspects were reportedly a man and woman who were in some form of relationship, but police had no further details at this time.

In a press release, officials said the two suspects appeared to have sustained self-inflicted injuries, but did not clarify if each of the two suspects shot themselves or if it was a murder-suicide.

Police say no officers fired their weapons during the incident. The deputies were from the civil division and were in full uniform and armed.

"We prepare for situations like this but you never know how it's going to affect you until it halls actually happens," said Captain Tya Modeste with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. "We're just thankful you know our deputy is - he made it through and he can tell us at some point what happened and he gets to live another day. And be with his family and we're thankful for that."
