Warriors' Stephen Curry surprises young fan with game invite for next season after viral shot

PLYMOUTH, Minn. (KGO) -- Stephen Curry is one of the most recognizable athletes on the planet. About 2,000 miles away from San Francisco -- in Plymouth, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis -- lives one of his biggest fans.

Twelve-year-old Wyatt Neus is finishing up the school year in style. During the teacher-student game, Neus, who has Down syndrome, lined up a long shot from "Curry range" and banked it in. The packed gym instantly erupted in cheers. As Wyatt, who was wearing a Curry jersey, ran back to the other end, he made sure to stamp it with Curry's signature "Night, Night" celebration.

"It was an amazing shot," said Neus.

His parents weren't surprised in the least that their son could hit such a shot in a basketball game. What amazed them was the video of Wyatt's shot going viral and the overwhelming support from near and far.

"Wyatt, we're amazed with all the time. It was a great shot; he's a great basketball player, but that was a big shot for him. But really, it was the students and staff, the community that it was with. I've never seen anything like it," said Wyatt's mother Brooke Neus.

"Maybe Brooke and I aren't that surprised that he made a shot, but I think it was one of one," said his father, Eric Neus. "From about three-point range, and so, yeah, that was really exciting."

The excitement was just beginning for Wyatt and his parents. The video made its way to the Golden State Warriors and ultimately to Stephen Curry. When asked how long he's been a Curry fan, Wyatt had a quick response.

"Since I was a baby," said Wyatt Neus.

ABC7 Sports Anchor Chris Alvarez was able to hop on a virtual call with the Neus family and share the surprise of a lifetime -- with the help of Stephen Curry. Curry, who saw the video, sent Wyatt a personalized message, along with a personal invite to a game in Minnesota next season.

"Hey Wyatt, just want to say that was really, really special and inspiring what you did, showing out in front of your whole school," said Curry in the video message. "Unbelievable shot, unbelievable celebration, and even better jersey. Great job, Wyatt. See you soon."

After seeing the video, Wyatt, who was sitting in between his parents on the virtual call, was in complete shock, calling it amazing.

"It's just shocking. I would just say just, you know, see how many people come in and love to see something so cool and natural and really just the community coming together," said Brooke Neus. "For Steph to take the time out of his day and to look at that is just, I never thought it would become anything like this. We thought it was a cool video that, you know, just like that. Hard to believe that we could maybe lighten other people's hearts, but this has taken a new life of its own, and we're so lucky."
