Police say it started around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday when officers spotted a suspect wanted in two armed robberies in an SUV and tried to stop him.
Investigators say the suspect pulled out a gun at officers, took off and later abandoned the vehicle in the area. The suspect then ran into a nearby home. Officers followed him inside to make sure everybody was safe, and that's when the shooting happened.
"In fact, when they made entry into the residence, there was a family with one at least one juvenile. When they entered, they located the suspect hiding in the residence. Our officers located the suspect, at which point the suspect shot at two officers, striking one officer at least once," said SJPD Public Information Representative Stacie Shih.
Other officers were at the hospital last night to support the injured officer.
Police say the suspect was shot at least once and later died at the scene.
The scene remains active as the investigation continues. Officials are asking everyone to avoid the area.
The department did not immediately release the details about the suspect.
