SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco police are investigating a homicide near the Embarcadero BART station Wednesday morning as they continue to search for the suspect.

A man died in the middle of the street in downtown San Francisco and the accused attacker got away through the nearby BART station.

Police found the victim just before 6 a.m. at the intersection of Market and Main Street, just steps away from the Embarcardero BART station.

The scene has been cleared and Market Street has reopened, but police were out investigating for more than three and a half hours.

The coroner came and removed the body that had been lying in the middle of Market Street all morning long during rush hour.

A nearby business owner tells ABC7 News that his surveillance video shows the victim coming from Beale Street before stumbling and collapsing near Market and Main.

SFPD were first called to the scene over reports of a person bleeding and despite life-saving efforts, the victim was pronounced dead.

This caused a brief closure of the Embarcadero BART station.

Officers could be seen walking into the station with rifles and a riot shield while they searched the area. However, no suspects are in custody.

San Francisco Mayor-elect Daniel Lurie posted this statement on social media:

"I'm deeply saddened to hear of yet another violent death in our city. Every resident and visitor deserves to feel safe, whether they are riding transit or walking our streets. Public safety is my top priority as we work to build a thriving San Francisco."

ABC7 News has reached out to Mayor London Breed's office for comment but we have not heard back.

She was expected to hold a press conference on public safety with Police Chief Bill Scott at Union Square just blocks away from the scene, but that has since been canceled due to a "scheduling conflict."
