I-280 in San Francisco reopens after police shooting closes it for nearly 5 hours

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Southbound lanes of Interstate 280 are back open in San Francisco. They were closed in the area just south of Mariposa Street for several hours after an officer shot someone.

"I may have heard a shot, I'm not sure. It sounded like something happened. Then I noticed on 280 that there were no cars going southbound," said Natasha Keswani who lives nearby.

CHP says an officer responded to a report of a pedestrian on the freeway. Here is what was heard on CHP's scanner channel.

"He's not being compliant, he has a knife in his pocket do you want clearance?" said the dispatcher.

Then 14 seconds later:

"Shots fired trying to get him in custody. Shots fired!"

CHP confirms that there was a struggle between the pedestrian and an officer. That officer then shot the person. Also a knife was recovered and the person shot is expected to survive.

The closed interstate added to the backups getting out of San Francisco. We sat in traffic just trying to get to this location.

Neighbors we spoke with say there are unhoused individuals that live in the area where the shooting happened along the freeway.

"There's these drainage pipes that empty out there and those drainage pipes are pretty large and there are homeless living inside those drainage pipes," said Sonny Gupta who lives in the area.

Investigators could be seen working late into the night in the area where the person was shot.

CHP says the officer was not injured.
