1 arrested in deadly shooting near SF's Powell St. BART station, police say

SAN FRANCISCO -- An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of a deadly shooting Thursday night in downtown San Francisco, police said.

Sacramento resident Daveon Crawford is suspected of the shooting reported at 8:39 p.m. Thursday at Market and Powell streets that injured a male victim who later died in a hospital. The shooting shut down the Powell Street BART station entrance Thursday night as police investigated the case.

Dispatchers broadcast a description of a male suspect accompanied by a girl, and an officer saw two people near Eighth and Mission streets who matched their description and had left in a taxicab, police said.

Police stopped the taxi several blocks away on Mission Street and found a firearm close to Crawford.

Crawford was booked into San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of murder. The girl with him was identified as a minor and was returned to a guardian, police said.

The name of the victim who died in the shooting was not immediately available.
