SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- An amazing chance to witness a rare celestial event has come and gone. On Monday, hundreds of thousands of people looked up to the sky to see the first total solar eclipse to sweep coast-to-coast across the U.S. in nearly a century.

The eclipse was the first in the Lower 48 states in 38 years.

The sun, moon and Earth lines up perfectly on Monday, turning day into night for a few minutes from Oregon to South Carolina. A partial eclipse will extended up through Canada and down to the top of South America.

The total eclipse on Aug. 21 lasted just 1 1/2 hours as the lunar shadow swept across the country.
