BART steps up patrols following attempted terrorist attack in NYC

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Close to ten bomb sniffing K-9's are patrolling BART stations around the Bay Area following an attempted terrorist attack in NYC.

"This could happen to us," said BART Police Deputy Chief Edgar Alvarez.

The K9's are trained to detect residue that could be used in explosive devices.

"It's never enough, we'd take 50 dogs if we could," said Alvarez.

Special assignment personnel are also deployed throughout the BART system in addition to a critical asset patrol team.

"Looking for suspicious packages, suspicious people," said Alvarez.

Still some riders say they haven't seen officers.

"When you look around you don't really see a lot of police presence," said BART rider Jeff Gonzalves.

"Unfortunately a lot of our ridership are asleep or not paying attention so they might not see our officers but our officers are out there actively patrolling," said Alvarez.

BART Police also encourage riders to say something if they see something.

Claire Day says she didn't let Monday morning's incident stop her from taking BART.

"No one is safe from that of course but you can't let that rule the day," said Day.

Officials say they have not received any credible threats locally.
