Los Gatos Mom, son die after family falls into frozen pond
Police say a Los Gatos mother and her 8-year-old son are dead after falling through ice and into a frozen pond in Kansas while on a trip to visit relatives.

MOUNDRIDGE, KS (KGO) -- A Los Gatos boy and his mother drowned in an icy pond Friday afternoon during a trip to visit family in Moundridge, Kansas.

Authorities have identified the drowning victims as 8-year-old Trent Classen and his mother, 44-year-old Polly Classen.

The fire chief says the two along with the boy's father all fell into what they believed was a frozen pond.

Fire crews pulled all three out of the water but the father was the only survivor.

Crews tried to use ladders and a hook to rescue the mom, but they couldn't reach her and had to call in a boat.

Authorities say the son was the last out of the water.

They said they were from California," said neighbor Aaron Baylock. "And they don't get weather like this. And unfortunately, no awareness was just a bad deal."

The ice on the pond appeared to be less than an inch thick.
