SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- A ribbon cutting ceremony kicked off the first ever Silicon Valley Comic Con at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose. The three-day event features the usual crowd of comic book fans, memorabilia, and costumes.

VIDEO: Get a quick peek at some of the characters that came out to play at Silicon Valley Comic Con:

There has been a Comic Con in Southern California for almost half a century, but it took one really special guy, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, to bring that tradition here to Silicon Valley.

Wozniak decided he had to bring Comic Con to San Jose.

"We've had characters that fly. so what did we technologists do? We made jet packs and these little water packs. Now we have devices that can see through walls like Superman," Wozniak said.

And there's a buzz in the air about who's coming.

"William Shatner, all my life has been a strong hero, but I can't let that on. I was too afraid as a kid to ever approach him at the Star Trek conventions," Wozniak said.

But for Wozniak the real star of the show s the crowd.

"I want to see these unusual people. Seeing people that live outside the social norms has always been a large part of my life. I grew up shy, an outsider, a geek," he said.

Of course, at Comic Con, the outsiders are the true insiders. He wants to bring them together.

"I want young people to come from all over, to meet other people, to find themselves, and feel that their being outside the norm in some areas is absolutely appropriate and good and admired," Wozniak said.

And this weekend, the "Woz" will get his own wax figure right next to Apple's other co-founder, Steve Jobs, a symbol of what a couple of geeks can do.
