California's ban on flavored tobacco now in effect
California's ban on flavored tobacco went into effect Wednesday after the Supreme Court denied a bid by the tobacco industry to block the measure.

California's ban on flavored tobacco went into effect Wednesday.

This comes after the Supreme Court rejected a bid last week by the tobacco industry to prevent the state from enforcing the law.

Under the new law, flavored tobacco for e-cigarettes, menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars can no longer be sold in stores.

State voters approved the ban when they voted for Proposition 31 in November.

Proponents said this would stop young people from smoking e-cigarettes, which come in different flavors such as cotton candy, berry and cherry. Opponents say an across-the-board ban on sales would create an underground market.
