Hundreds of surfers joined the paddle-out at Pleasure Point in Santa Cruz County where O'Neill lived.

"He's legend. He made surfing what it is today, so to honor him with going out in front of his house and just remembering him out in the water where he used to surf is a huge honor to participate in," Zachary Herlevi from Santa Cruz said.

Organizers of the Santa Cruz paddle out say they broke the world record for the largest paddle-out.
