Former SJ Mayor Sam Liccardo wins election in 16th Congressional District over Evan Low, AP projects

Democrat Sam Liccardo wins election to U.S. House in California's 16th Congressional District, according to the Associated Press.

One of the closest races in the Bay Area has been called.

It's for District 16 in the U.S. House, formerly Anna Eshoo's seat.

The Associated Press has called the race for former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo over Assemblymember Evan Low.

It has been a contentious race since the primary election in March.

Liccardo won first place by a wide margin, but Low and Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian tied for second place.

All three were to go to the general, but a recount was called for by a former staffer of Liccardo's.

Low accused Liccardo of being behind the recount which Liccardo denied.

"The stakes were high, and I think both of these candidates, you know, really gave it their all," said Melinda Jackson, San Jose State University political science professor.

The fight for the District 16 congressional seat has been an intense one.

Anna Eshoo has held the seat for more than 30 years and is retiring.

SF Mayoral Race: Lurie leads Breed after first rounds of ranked-choice voting

Daniel Lurie has a commanding lead over incumbent London Breed in the race for San Francisco mayor with preliminary numbers in.

Daniel Lurie has a commanding lead over incumbent London Breed in the race for San Francisco mayor as of Wednesday morning, with preliminary numbers in.

After the first ranked-choice voting calculations, Lurie has 56% of the vote and Breed has 43.6%. Lurie leads Breed by over 24,000 votes and all other candidates have been eliminated. There will be more reports of calculations as the votes come in.

Lurie has never held public office. He is the founder of a San Francisco nonprofit and heir to the Levi Strauss fortune.

He says he is vowing to bring change to San Francisco and make the city a place that residents can be proud of, but he says it won't happen overnight.

The race hasn't been called yet, but Lurie posted on X Tuesday night, saying "The campaign is over," and that "it's time for us to roll up our sleeves and work together-no matter the outcome of this election."

VIDEO: Here's why SF mayoral race may take longer to decide

Prof. Melinda Jackson, PH.D. from the San Jose State University Dept. of Political Science explains why it might be a while before we get the final results from the San Francisco mayoral race.

At his watch party Tuesday night, he said he's hoping for victory and his supporters were excited by his early lead.

Mayor London Breed is holding her ground, telling supporters Tuesday night she's vowing to go the distance. She pointed out that she was not in the lead for several days when she was first elected six years ago. She won that race by just 2,500 votes.

Both candidates urged everyone to be patient during the vote count.

East Bay voters favoring recall of Mayor Sheng Thao, DA Pamela Price

In the East Bay, voters are currently in favor of recalling Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao.

In the East Bay, voters are currently in favor of recalling two of the highest-profile politicians.

Both the recalls of Alameda District Attorney Pamela Price and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao are leading 65% to 35%, with 100% of precincts reporting.

The latest count shows Price appears to be on the way out. She's been accused of being too soft on crime.

If Price is eventually recalled, the Board of Supervisors will appoint an interim DA who will serve until 2026.

In Oakland, Mayor Sheng Thao also appears to be losing her job. She has faced similar criticism as Price about her stance on crime and is under heat for the city's budget deficit and an FBI raid on her property.
