President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes attack targeting military and government sites, officials said.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was among those killed in Tehran on the first day of strikes, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei later chosen to succeed him. Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel, regional U.S. bases and multiple Gulf nations. Iran is also attempting to block some shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Israel is also intensifying its long-running strike campaign against the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon and expanding its ground operations in the south of the country.

Wall Street has its worst day since the war with Iran started and crude oil prices rise

Stocks fell sharply Thursday, and oil prices rose as doubt took over again from hope on Wall Street about a possible end to the war with Iran.

The S&P 500 slumped 1.7% for its worst day since January and is back on track for a fifth straight losing week. That stretches back to before the Iran war began, and it would be the longest such losing streak in nearly four years.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 469 points, or 1%, and the Nasdaq composite sank 2.4% to fall more than 10% below its all-time high set early this year. That's a steep enough drop that professional investors have a name for it: a "correction."

On Thursday, the fighting continued, and thousands more U.S. troops neared the region. Iran, meanwhile, tightened its grip on the crucial Strait of Hormuz. It may be creating something like a "toll booth" for tankers to get past the narrow waterway, which typically sees a fifth of the world's oil exit the Persian Gulf through it to customers worldwide.

The price for a barrel of Brent crude oil climbed 4.8% to settle at $101.89 as hopes dimmed for a potential return to normal for the strait. That's up from roughly $70 before the war began. Benchmark U.S. crude rose 4.6% to $94.48 per barrel.

Trump also repeated his claims that the U.S. does not need help from anyone in Iran, including NATO, while saying he is "disappointed" in NATO.

Trump says 'I don't care' to strike deal with Iran, takes questions on rising oil prices

President Donald Trump on Thursday, during his first cabinet meeting since the start of the war in Iran, dismissed the need for talks to end the conflict, maintaining the operation has crippled Iran to the point that it's Tehran that seeks a deal.

Despite the president touting on Thursday the U.S. is currently engaging in "substantial talks" with Iran, and his administration offered up a 15-point plan to resolve the conflict, he also said that there are still "other targets we want to hit before we leave" and that he doesn't "care" about reaching a deal or not.

When asked whether he might push back his deadline for negotiations not to strike energy sites in Iran, Trump said that it would depend on how negotiations go.
