Oscars: ABC7's Luz Pena talks to Bay Area nominees on the red carpet

LOS ANGELES -- "Oppenheimer," a solemn three-hour biopic that became an unlikely billion-dollar box-office sensation, was crowned best picture at a 96th Academy Awards that doubled as a coronation for Christopher Nolan.

The most closely watched contest of the Academy Awards went to Emma Stone, who won best best actress for her performance as Bella Baxter in "Poor Things." In what was seen as the night's most nail-biting category, Stone won over Lily Gladstone of "Killers of the Flower Moon." Gladstone would have become the first Native American to win an Academy Award.

Instead, Oscar voters couldn't resist the full-bodied extremes of Stone's "Poor Things" performance. The win for Stone, her second best actress Oscar following her 2017 win for "La La Land," confirmed the 35-year-old as arguably the preeminent big-screen actress of her generation.

Here are the most memorable moments from the 96th Academy Awards and the hottest Oscar after parties.

Robert Downey Jr. wins best supporting actor

Robert Downey Jr. has won his first Oscar for best performance by an actor in a supporting role for his work in "Oppenheimer."

The actor won the award for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in "Oppenheimer."

The award was introduced by previous Oscar winners in the category including Ke Huy Quan, Sam Rockwell, Tim Robbins, Christoph Waltz and Mahershala Ali. They all shared words honoring each nominee before the Oscar was given to Downey.

Robert Downey Jr. won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Oppenheimer."

"Thanks Sam, thanks fellas. You only flubbed one line," Downey joked during his acceptance speech. "I'd like to thank my terrible childhood and the academy, in that order. I'd like to thank my veterinarian -- I mean wife, Susan Downey, over there. She found me, a snarling rescue pet, and you loved me back to life, and that's why I'm here. Thank you."

"Here's my little secret. I needed this job more than it needed me," he continued. "Chris knew it, Emma made sure that she surrounded me with one of the great casts and crews of all time: Emily, Cillian, Matt Damon, Blunt -- it was fantastic. And I stand here before you a better man because of it."

Downey ended his speech by saying, "What we do is meaningful and the stuff that we decide to make is important," before thanking his stylist, entertainment lawyer and others.

This awards season, Downey's role in "Oppenheimer" earned him a Golden Globe for best performance by a male actor in a supporting role in any motion picture and a Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting role. Downey and the rest of the "Oppenheimer" cast also won a SAG Award for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture.

Other nominees in the category included Sterling K. Brown for "American Fiction," Robert De Niro for "Killers of the Flower Moon," Ryan Gosling for "Barbie" and Mark Ruffalo for "Poor Things."

A naked John Cena introduces award for best costume design

In a skit that brought the audience nearly to tears laughing, a stripped down John Cena introduced the Oscar for best costume design.

Host Jimmy Kimmel started it by referencing the memorable moment at the 46th Academy Awards when a naked man ran across the stage while flashing a peace sign.

He then asked and proceeded to repeat, "Can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today?" Eventually, Cena poked his head out from the side of the stage.
