Broken water main continues to cause problems in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Work is continuing Friday night to patch up the San Francisco intersection where a broken water main busted early in the morning.

The intersection of 4th and Howard in the city's always busy South of Market neighborhood has been tied up for repairs, causing delays for drivers.

The man hole has been covered up, and fresh concrete has been laid out over much of the intersection.

For some people leaving following an afternoon of shopping, the blocked intersection poses a bit of an obstacle.

For bicyclists who rely on the Howard Street bike lane, Southbound Howard to 3rd Street was a challenge, but past the construction it was a breeze.

"Cars are changing lanes sporadically," said one bicyclist Chad Roffey. "It's a little bit dangerous, but not significantly more than usual."

The 121-year-old, 12 inch water main failed at 3 a.m. causing water to gush out of the street.

"Very little damage to any of the properties," said Suzanne Gautier of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. "Some flooding, spillage at some of the garages in the area."

The Marriott Hotel underground garage experienced some of the flooding. The Central Subway construction project also got some water, but work continued.

There was a slight reduction in pressure for nearby customers, but water was quickly rerouted.
