Jackknifed big rig causes traffic mess on NB I-238 near San Leandro after driver falls asleep: CHP
SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (KGO) -- A jackknifed big rig with its axle ripped off has created major traffic impacts for East Bay commuters Friday, after the California Highway Patrol said the driver fell asleep.
The big rig is blocking lanes on the connector between Interstates 238 and 880, and the backup stretched for miles Friday morning.
The crash happened after 3 a.m., right near the San Leandro, San Lorenzo border. As of 11 a.m., lanes are still impacted, with cars only able to drive through in a makeshift lane on the shoulder. Southbound I-880 has reopened after being closed.
The CHP says that the driver fell asleep and the truck crashed into a sand barrel, which exploded and sand went into lanes. The axle is also ripped out from under the truck.
CHP confirms that there were no injuries in the crash and that the driver was coming from the Central Valley, carrying around 40,000 pounds of fruit.
Crews working to clear the wreck have been pulling out boxes and boxes of fruit that they are loading onto trucks to get them out.
Then they might be able to move the trailer over to get it out of the lanes.
CHP is reminding everybody that if you feel sleepy on the road, please pull over.
