SAN JOSE, Calif. -- One person was killed and three were injured early Friday after a shooting at a furniture store near downtown San Jose, police said.

Officers responded about 3:43 a.m. to multiple reports of shots fired inside an after-hours business in the 800 block of South First Street, police said.

Three of the four victims were men, police said. One man subsequently died and became the city's 26th homicide of 2025.

The fourth victim, a woman, arrived at a hospital suffering from at least one gunshot wound, police said in a press release.

The two remaining men and the woman were expected to survive, police said.

A suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival. The motive and circumstances surrounding the event were under investigation.

Located right next door is Luna Tattoo Studio. On Friday evening, we spoke with the owner, Erika Perez.

"My first thing was to check-in with everybody that works with me even if its next door - we all have to kind of look out for each other," Perez said.

Around 5 a.m. Friday, Zay Caceres tried to open his gym on the corner, WAR Fitness Bay Area, but he couldn't because the street was closed off. He had to come back a couple hours later.

"To me, it's just more shocking that it happened in our community," Caceres said.

Caceres says city leaders have made a concerted effort to clean up the area.

"I just want people to know that it happened at night, you know nothing good happens at night so I just want people to know you know that it is safe," Caceres said.

Police asked anyone who may have been present or who may have video evidence or information to contact Detective Sgt. Taylor at 4257@sanjoseca.gov, Detective Sgt. Barragan at 4106@sanjoseca.gov or Detective Van Brande at 4542@sanjoseca.gov or (408) 277-5283.
