Fatal shooting connected to body found inside burned Santa Clara home

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- Santa Clara police said a fatal shooting and a body found inside a burned home on the same block are connected, as investigators continue to search for answers days after the violence unfolded.

The structure fire was reported Friday after police were called about 12:30 p.m. to a home in the 600 block of Enright Avenue, where a man was found fatally shot outdoors. Minutes later, a nearby house caught fire, prompting a large emergency response.

Authorities later confirmed a second body was found inside the burned home. Santa Clara Police used drones to locate the body in the back of the burned house. But it was only safe for officials to approach the body on Saturday morning.

Police have not identified either individual or said what caused the fire.

Surveillance video viewed by our ABC7 Eyewitness News team from across the street shows two men talking in a driveway around 12:30 p.m. Friday. One man then pulls out a gun and shoots the other, who falls to the ground. The victim is shot at least 10 more times before the suspect runs away.

Richard Schoolcraft, who lives nearby, said the scene remained active for hours as police, helicopters, drones and heavy machinery filled the block. On Sunday it was quiet.

"They're just gone. Not telling us anything," Schoolcraft said.

Authorities have said the attack appears to be targeted and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

"I'm not afraid of them coming and shooting up the neighborhood. That's not a concern," Schoolcraft said.

Still, the lack of information has fueled speculation among residents.

"They're telling us nothing, they're keeping it a secret," Schoolcraft said.

Police said they expect to release more information later in the week as the investigation continues.
