Where does my food come from? Here's where to look to find 'country of origin'

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- When it comes to food safety, a quick look at the label can tell you more than you think.

Whether you're tracking a recall or trying to buy local, there's one key detail to look for.

It's called Country of Origin Labeling, or "COOL." A federal law requires grocery stores to tell shoppers where certain foods are produced.

That includes many fresh fruits and vegetables, some meats, seafood, and certain nuts.

The country of origin may appear on a sticker, tag, or package, but it can also be posted on a shelf or store display.

For fresh produce, the label should identify where the food was harvested.

If you can't find that information, ask a store employee. And if you think a store isn't following the rules, you can report it to the USDA.
