HAYWARD, Calif. (KGO) -- The San Mateo Bridge closure put extra pressure on other Bay Area roadways this weekend.
Many Giants fans say they anticipated the heavier than normal traffic conditions Sunday, so they took public transportation to get to AT&T Park.
Two crews spent Sunday afternoon resurfacing the deck structure. Both eastbound and westbound lanes are still closed.
Crews are also doing routine maintenance that will prolong the life of the bridge that was built in the late 1960's. After this, the bridge won't need a face lift until another 50 years.
"We know this is an inconvenience, but it would be more of one if we tried to do it with one day closures that would take a long time and cause a lot of inconvenience and a lot of traffic congestion by itself, so closing it two weekends getting everything done that really is the better way in the long run to do things," Caltrans spokesperson Bob Haus said.
Caltrans says they are on schedule for the San Mateo Bridge to open at 5 a.m. Monday. Then, after that they will close the bridge on Memorial Day weekend starting late Friday evening until Monday.
Caltrans is asking drivers to take alternate routes and advising drivers to give themselves extra time to get to their destination.
