SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The price of renting a place in San Francisco through Airbnb is about to go up.

The company said Wednesday it plans to collect the city's 14 percent occupancy tax on the houses and apartments it rents out in San Francisco.

Homeowners won't have to do anything. Airbnb will tack on the tax when it collects from its customers, like it already does in Portland, Ore.

The company has come under fire in San Francisco for not having to pay the same taxes as hotels pay.

Officials estimate it will add up to more than $11 million a year in additional city revenues.
