Lawmaker considers ignition locks for DUI offenders in CA

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A Peninsula lawmaker is calling for ignition locks for all DUI offenders in California.

State Senator Jerry Hill will introduce the legislation on Monday.

The device would be installed inside the car and act as a breathalyzer for repeat offenders.

The engine will not start if it detects a blood alcohol level that exceeds the legal limit.

Hill has tried a similar bill before that did not pass.

This is currently a pilot program in four counties - Alameda is one of them. Some states have also passed the law.
