A Salvadoran migrant who was in ICE custody died following a "medical emergency" over the weekend, federal officials said.
Yolanda Ramirez's death was linked to blunt force trauma to the head and torso as well as asphyxiation as a consequence of Brentwood police restraint in October.
While the department noted that "the official cause of death remains under investigation," they labeled the incident a "presumed suicide."
"She is dead because of them. A 72-year-old grandma, never been in trouble with the law." The family of Yolanda Ramirez has filed lawsuits against the Brentwood Police Department after months of trying to get answers on what happened to the East Bay woman who died in October while in custody.
The Oakland Police Department has declined to provide the public with access to police body camera videos that would show what happened on Oct. 18, the morning former Oakland Raiders running back Doug Martin died while in the custody of several OPD officers.
"I guarantee you if this was someone in a Mercedes-Benz in a million-dollar home and this was a white woman, this would not have happened, and we all know that," said the attorney for the family of Yolanda Ramirez, who died following an interaction with police.
