Thousands of San Jose city employees are voting this week on whether to authorize a strike as contract negotiations between two of the city's largest unions and city leaders remain at an impasse.
Thanks to a generous anonymous donor, about 6,000 teachers and paraeducators in the San Francisco Unified School District are each receiving $250 gift cards.
Dublin Teachers Association says the agreement includes guaranteed elementary school counselors and improved healthcare coverage. The teachers asked for 3.5% pay increase but settled for a 2.3% cost of living adjustment, prioritizing smaller class size instead.
Dublin Unified Superintendent Chris Funk said the union's offer would translate to $32 million over the next three years and could lead to 60 to 80 teacher layoffs.
The teachers' demands remain unchanged: a 3.5% pay raise, better health care coverage, smaller class size. And to keep elementary school counselors.
Teachers with the Dublin Unified School District went on strike Monday after no deal was reached this weekend. The district says all school sites will remain open even though more than 700 educators will hit the picket line.
